Bulgaria's Minister of Agriculture, Giorgi Takhov, has appealed to the European Commission for protective measures against the import of honey from Ukraine, citing the need to safeguard local honey sales and the sector's competitiveness. The volume of Ukrainian honey imports to Bulgaria has surged by over 30% in the past three years, negatively impacting local prices and posing challenges for Bulgarian producers. The European Commission has introduced tariff quotas for Ukrainian honey and other agricultural products like eggs and sugar to address the market disruption caused by the surge in imports. These measures aim to balance market equilibrium and support the affected sectors, highlighting the need for effective enforcement against counterfeit honey and providing compensation for competitive disadvantages.
