In the Rangpur agricultural region of Bangladesh, char people have successfully cultivated pumpkins on sandy char lands located in the silted-beds of various rivers, despite the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic. This initiative, which began in 2009 with support from various departments and NGOs, has not only led to a bumper pumpkin harvest but also a significant improvement in their livelihoods and a reduction in poverty. The low farming costs and the use of intercropping and mixed relay methods have allowed farmers to sell the pumpkins at lucrative prices, with around 55,000 char families experiencing a positive transformation. The Department of Agricultural Extension and other organizations have provided support and technologies to enhance crop production and food security, contributing to the self-reliance of many char and riverside communities.
