In 2021, the Yucatan Peninsula, especially the states of Campeche, Sonora, and Yucatan, contributed significantly to the production of habanero chili peppers, with Campeche leading as the largest producer at 6,475.95 tons. Despite this, farmers in the region experienced a 13% decrease in payment for their produce. The habanero peppers from Campeche were not only consumed locally but also reached various parts of Mexico, with retailers in Villahermosa and the Port of Veracruz achieving the highest profit margins. The habanero pepper, along with other products like vanilla, rice, and Ataulfo mango, has been protected by a denomination of origin certificate since 2010, aiming to prevent piracy and unfair competition.
