Japanese scallops, once a luxury item, have become more affordable and popular in Vietnam. The price has dropped by about 50% in the past year, making it a regular purchase for Mai Anh and available in many businesses in Ho Chi Minh City. The increase in importation by businesses and the Vietnamese association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) is due to Japan's necessity to expand its market after China's ban on seafood imports following the Fukushima nuclear plant incident. Vietnam is now not only a consumer market but also a processing site for scallops, which are then exported back to Japan.
