Turkey, the world's leading cherry producer, celebrated its first cherry harvest of 2024 in the Şehzadeler district of Manisa, starting a week earlier than the previous year due to an early spring. With 2.4 million of the country's 22 million cherry trees, the first cherry was auctioned for a symbolic 2 thousand TL. Aiming for a harvest of 725 thousand tons, Turkey plans to export 100 thousand tons, hoping to generate 250 million dollars annually. The country is focusing on improving its export rankings by targeting key markets like Germany, the Russian Federation, and China, and by promoting residue-free cherry production to meet phytosanitary standards. In 2023, Turkey exported cherries worth 215 million dollars, with Germany being the top importer, as it seeks to enhance its share in the global market and achieve sustainable export growth.
