In the first quarter of 2023, China saw a significant increase in agricultural imports, with a year-on-year rise of 18.8%. This surge was observed across various product categories, especially in pork, where imports grew by the same percentage, reaching approximately 820,000 tonnes. Fresh and frozen pork products experienced the highest demand, leading to a 26% increase in imports. Countries like Brazil and Canada have notably benefited from China's higher pork import needs, while the USA also saw a 33% rise in pork exports to China. Despite the growth, European suppliers, notably Spain, are expressing concerns over the price disparity between their products and those from North and South American competitors, attributing it to higher costs in raising and rearing pigs.
