Climate change is causing significant challenges for coffee production in major growing regions, leading to decreased yields and infertile land. Farmers in Vietnam, the largest producer of robusta coffee beans, are facing uncertainty due to changes in water sources and have had to switch to other crops such as black pepper and durian. The coffee industry, worth an estimated US$200 billion, is at risk and coffee bean buyers are urging farmers to switch to more climate-resistant varieties and adopt sustainable farming practices, but the limitations of robusta and the potential for significant reductions in production due to climate change are still a concern.
