The ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) in Kochi, India, is going to support the Seafood Exporters Association of India (SEAI) to enhance seafood exports by providing technical support for the sustainable harvest of 11 seafood resources from Kerala. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between the institute and the SEAI to conduct a consultancy research project focusing on evaluating the health of stock and fishery performance of various seafood species, including shrimp and cephalopods. The project aims to set management targets, report on the incidental capture of endangered species, and suggest management actions. This initiative is designed to promote sustainable fishing practices, in line with the global shift towards sustainable seafood, and will help the marine fisheries sector access more seafood markets.
