Cold weather in Türkiye brings joy to olive producers

The cold wave that has been effective throughout Turkey has had positive results for olive producers. According to experts, olive trees need to be exposed to cold weather conditions for a certain period of time in order to have a productive flowering period. Balıkesir University Edremit Vocational School Lecturer Dr. Mücahit Kıvrak stated in his statement on the subject that olive trees enter a dormant period at temperatures below 7 degrees and need a chilling period of 500 to 1,000 hours for a productive production period. Dr. Kıvrak said, "Last year, the olive trees that slept the most in Türkiye had a chilling period of 432 hours. However, this period has increased significantly thanks to the Siberian cold experienced this year. This situation will allow olive trees to bloom more strongly and healthily in the spring."
