Italy has seen a significant decrease in fruit production in 2021, with a 27% drop resulting in the loss of nearly a quarter of the country's fruit production. This decline, caused by extreme weather conditions including droughts, water surges, hailstorms, and frost, has affected various fruits such as apples, pears, plums, kiwis, apricots, and peaches. This situation has led to increased costs for consumers and challenges for producers, with the fruit and vegetable sector in Italy providing 40% of Italy's agriculture jobs and generating a revenue of 15 billion euros annually. Coldiretti, the organization that reported these findings, is advocating for the adoption of risk management measures to mitigate the effects of climate change on agriculture.
