Colombia has temporarily halted imports of shrimp and crustaceans from Ecuador due to concerns over the detection of the white spot syndrome virus (WSSV). This decision is aimed at safeguarding Colombia's domestic producers and preventing the introduction of the disease into the Caribbean region, which is currently WSSV-free. The suspension will be lifted once there is proof that the health risk of Ecuadorian shrimp has been adequately addressed. Meanwhile, Colombian authorities are collaborating with their Ecuadorian counterparts to find a resolution and are allowing entries of Ecuadorian shrimp with specific certificates and test results that confirm the absence of WSSV. This situation parallels Saudi Arabia's temporary ban on shrimp imports from India for similar reasons, underscoring the global efforts to protect aquaculture from harmful diseases.
