An investigation by the Initiatives for Community Development and Forest Conservation (IDEF) has uncovered that companies sourcing cocoa from Côte d'Ivoire are contributing to forest destruction in Liberia due to flawed traceability mechanisms. IDEF, led by Bakary Traoré, has called for the adoption of Côte d'Ivoire's national traceability system to prevent this. The European Union's Deforestation Regulation, set to be enforced from December 2024, prohibits the import and marketing of cocoa beans from deforested lands. However, IDEF emphasizes the need for strong enforcement mechanisms to ensure compliance. The investigation also revealed that Ivorian farmers, due to unproductive lands, are deforesting and relocating to Liberia, leading to a lack of infrastructure for exporting cocoa, resulting in beans being carried back to Côte d'Ivoire.
