OGM is conducting studies on the inventory and utilization of thyme, a commonly used spice, in Turkey. The country has 55 thousand tons of usable thyme in forests spread over 340 thousand hectares. Thyme is harvested between the beginning of flowering and full bloom period, mainly for essential oil production. In 2020, thyme contributed 1 billion TL to Turkey's economy and brought in 69 million dollars from exports. Thyme essential oil has numerous health benefits and is used in aromatherapy for various respiratory issues.
