The University of Bonn, in partnership with the Gobabeb Namib Research Institute and other institutions, has launched the FRAMe project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, to explore melon varieties adapted to drought in southern Africa. Focusing on orphan crops, which are crucial for food and agriculture diversity, the project aims to document and analyze drought-resistant melon varieties, building on local farmers' knowledge and experiences. This initiative is a significant step towards sustainable agriculture in a climate-changed world, highlighting the potential of underutilized plant genetic resources for enhancing food security.

Southern Africa has a rich variety of crops - with their natural and wild relatives as well as so-called "orphan crops". The latter are “neglected” plant varieties that serve as genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGRFA) but are not widely used. The "Farmer Resilience and Melon Crop Diversity in southern Africa" (FRAMe) project aims at future-oriented agriculture of crop diversity using the example of melons. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is funding the project with over 300,000 euros over the next three years. Orphan crops have been a steady basis for feeding small farmers and rural communities for generations."In the face of constantly changing environmental conditions as a result of climate change and the growing world population, ...
