South Korea's domestic seaweed exports, primarily laver, have reached over $500 million at the end of last month, a record achieved in the shortest time since 2017. The popularity of seaweed as a low-calorie, healthy snack, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, has driven this growth. Exports to a diverse range of countries have expanded, with significant increases in exports to Russia, Brazil, Mexico, Israel, and the United Arab Emirates. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries is actively supporting the seaweed industry and plans to implement new policies in December to further enhance its quality and global competitiveness.
