Switzerland experienced a 10% decrease in cattle slaughterings in June 2021 compared to the previous year, with the cow sector experiencing the most significant drop, according to the Swiss Farmers Union's agricultural statistics service, Agristat. Despite the pandemic, there was a surge in slaughterings in June 2020, following containment measures. The average slaughter weight for cattle was lower this year compared to the previous year, but higher after containment. The number of pigs and goats slaughtered increased by 3% and 7.5% respectively, while sheep saw a slight increase of 0.7%. Overall, meat production in Switzerland fell by 13.8% for large cattle, 5.5% for calves, 0.5% for sheep, and 17.2% for goats, but pork production increased by 3.1%. The first half of the year saw a decrease in the production of bull meat, beef, cattle, veal, sheep, and goat meat, while cow meat production increased, along with pork.
