The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries in South Korea has prohibited the installation of new Styrofoam buoys in floating farms that culture laver and oysters, with a ban on new installations in all fisheries coming into effect from November 13 of the next year. This move is part of a larger initiative to replace Styrofoam buoys with ones that do not contain expanded polystyrene, in an effort to reduce the amount of microplastics in the ocean. The ministry will impose fines for any new Styrofoam buoys caught in use, with the penalties increasing for repeated offenses. Additionally, the ministry is promoting the supply of certification buoys and plans to collect and dispose of waste Styrofoam buoys.
