Five companies in Hungary handle the processing of chestnuts and the production of frozen chestnut puree, generating an annual revenue of HUF 3-4 billion. The industry's main product is chestnut puree, with a lighter color indicating higher quality. Both domestic and imported chestnuts are used in the process, with imports primarily from Portugal, Albania, and northern Macedonia. Despite a decrease in imports in recent years, there has been a dynamic increase in exports of chestnut puree in the last few years, with the main markets being Austria, Slovakia, and Romania. The industry's outlook is favorable due to a growing demand for chestnut puree in Europe, and the sector may be less impacted by the coronavirus due to its seasonality.
