Recent data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) of Ireland reveals a notable decline in domestic milk intake by creameries and pasteurisers, dropping by nine million litres between January and February of this year. The total milk intake in February was approximately 361.3 million litres, marking a 1.7% decrease from the same period in 2022. Additionally, the data highlights a reduction in total milk sold for human consumption, from 37.9 million litres in 2022 to 36.7 million litres in 2023. Furthermore, the fat and protein content of milk increased slightly during the same period.
The report also indicates a 6% decrease in domestic butter production in February, although levels were slightly higher than in 2021. The production figures for skimmed milk powder and cheese are not yet available for February. At the EU level, Germany led in milk intake in January 2023, followed by France and Poland, while Cyprus and Croatia had the lowest intakes.
