Colombia's fruit exports, including citrus, saw a 4.7% increase in 2022, reaching US$1,476 million. However, the citrus sector is facing a crisis, with productivity losses of up to 40% due to climatic phenomena, high input prices, and lack of technology, research, and training. This has led to a reduction in citrus planting and concerns about job losses. The sector also faces challenges due to the impact of heavy rains and the approach of the El Niño phenomenon. The situation is further complicated by the loss of production capacity in fruit packaging and processing plants. The Citrus Growers of Colombia (Citricauca) express concern that Colombia may not be able to meet export demand, particularly for Tahiti lime, due to the production crisis.
