China has officially started importing durians from Vietnam after a partnership between the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the General Department of Customs. This has led to a significant expansion in the durian cultivation area in Vietnam, with the country now having about 90,000 hectares under durian cultivation and producing approximately 1.3 million tons of fruit per year. The profitability of durian farming, especially in Tien Giang province, has attracted many farmers, leading to the conversion of other crops to durian cultivation. However, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has issued a directive encouraging sustainable and efficient durian and passion fruit cultivation, including the review of planting area codes and packing establishments for export, strict management of seedling quality, and the promotion of good agricultural practices.
