In 2021, Vietnam's herring exports saw a decrease of 9% from the previous year, generating revenue of 37.5 million USD. The majority of these exports were concentrated in five markets, accounting for 76% of the total value. Despite a decrease in exports to four out of these five markets, Thailand's imports of herring canned fish from Vietnam increased by 60%. Japan became the largest market for herring exports in 2021, with exports to the country remaining stable from the previous year at 7.8 million USD.
The early months of 2022 saw a rise in herring exports to Japan by 35%, contributing to 20% of the total herring exports. However, from December 2022, Japan will mandate the requirement for a certificate of capture fisheries for herring exports, among other products. Despite challenges such as raw material availability and market demand, there is an anticipated increase in herring exports in the coming months. The top 10 markets for herring exports in 2020 and 2021 included the US, South Korea, Australia, and other countries, with varying changes in import values.
