A study conducted between 2015 and 2017 investigated the effectiveness of trap cropping to control the pea weevil (Bruchus pisorum), a pest that affects field pea crops. The research utilized four different crop configurations in large plot trials, including an early and a late flowering field pea variety, and a spring barley. The results showed that the early flowering field pea variety, when planted at the margins, successfully attracted and trapped pea weevils, leading to a positive aggregation of eggs and infested seeds in these areas. This finding suggests that strategically using an early flowering field pea variety as a trap crop could be an effective approach in pest management for field pea crops, especially when the egg-laying period is shorter than 14-21 days.
