(Jeonju=Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Jin-bang = The Rural Development Administration announced on the 9th that it has advanced the harvest period of summer napa cabbage by one month compared to the past by applying high-temperature mitigation comprehensive technology in semi-highland areas.
Summer napa cabbage is mainly cultivated in highland areas with an altitude of 600 meters or more. Recently, supply issues have been recurring due to the increase in pests and diseases caused by abnormal weather and continuous rainfall.
In particular, after mid-September when the napa cabbage stored in spring is depleted, demand overlaps before Chuseok, causing a sharp rise in prices.
To solve this problem, the Rural Development Administration's research team has been conducting experiments since 2023 by planting high-temperature-resistant napa cabbage 'Haradu' in semi-highland areas with an altitude of 400-600 meters and applying high-temperature mitigation technologies such as low-temperature film, micro-drip irrigation, and physiological activators.
Semi-highland areas are 1-3 degrees Celsius warmer than highland areas, allowing napa cabbage production from early October.
The experimental results showed that napa cabbage cultivated in semi-highland areas with high-temperature mitigation technology did not suffer from high-temperature damage from July, with an average weight per plant exceeding 3 kg and good growth. The production yield also recorded more than 7 tons per 1,000 square meters, which is 1.8 tons more than the average production yield of 5.2 tons in highland areas.
The harvest period was also moved from early to mid-October to mid to late September, increasing farm income by 4.19 million won per 1,000 square meters.
Ok Hyeon-chung, Director of the Vegetable Basic Infrastructure Division at the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science, said, "Based on the results of this experiment, we plan to strengthen the early shipment cultivation technology in semi-highland areas and expand its dissemination to major production areas. In the long term, we will work together with the policy department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries to create production zones in semi-highland areas to do our best to stabilize the supply and demand of summer napa cabbage."
