The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in the Philippines has reported that 11 bays in Eastern Visayas are affected by red tide due to abnormal weather conditions. The red tide toxins are present in the bays of Catbalogan City, Basey, and several towns in Samar, as well as in other bays in Leyte and Samar. Despite this, BFAR assures that seafood harvested from these areas is safe to eat if it is fresh, thoroughly washed, and the internal organs are removed. BFAR is regularly analyzing water samples and has asked local government units to prevent the gathering, trading, and consumption of shellfish to prevent paralytic shellfish poisoning.
