The European Commission has proposed fishing opportunities for 2025, setting total allowable catches (TACs) for various fish stocks in the Atlantic, Kattegat, and Skagerrak, with some extending to 2026. The proposal, based on scientific advice from the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), aims to align with the maximum sustainable yield (MSY) for most stocks while considering social and economic factors. It includes by-catch TACs to support mixed fisheries and maintain fishing activities on healthy stocks. The number of TACs is reduced due to multiannual TACs, with some increases in catch limits and measures for the European eel. The proposal will be updated after consultations with Norway, the UK, and regional fisheries management organizations, and is set to apply from January 2025.
