The Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) has declared the Russian ban on tomato and pepper imports from Kazakhstan as illegal. The ban, introduced by Rosselkhoznadzor in December 2020 and extended in January 2021, was imposed due to concerns about the brown wrinkle virus in Kazakhstani produce. However, the EEC has ruled that the ban is a protectionist measure and has ordered Russia to lift the restrictions within a month. The decision was supported by other EEC member states, while Kazakhstan's Ministry of Trade has highlighted that the virus is not on the agreed list and that studies have shown Kazakhstani produce is virus-free. The ban has resulted in over 200 million tenge in losses for Kazakhstani enterprises.
