A recent government report has found that Egypt's meat imports have decreased significantly in the first quarter of 2023, compared to the same period in 2022. The report shows a decrease of $296.9 million, a 54.3% drop, with the total volume importing to $249.8 million. The import of live cows alone decreased by $9.4 million, from $45.1 million to $35.6 million. Additionally, preserved fish imports also saw a decrease, from $273.6 million to $143.4 million. Despite this, Egypt's red meat consumption remains high at 900 thousand tons per year, with 430 thousand tons imported and 470 thousand tons produced locally. The Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade is planning to offer large quantities of livestock and meat from six countries.
