In the first seven months of 2024, Egypt has significantly increased its wheat imports, bringing in 10.8 million tonnes, a notable 2.5 million tonnes more than the same period in the previous year. Russia and Ukraine have been the primary suppliers, contributing 80% and 16% of the imports, respectively. Despite this surge, Egypt is still pushing forward with its strategy to reduce wheat dependency by introducing sorghum and corn as alternate cereals for subsidized bread, with the aim of cutting costs. To support this transition, the Egyptian government-owned grain operator, GASC, has secured a substantial direct agreement with Black Sea wheat suppliers, ensuring a consistent monthly supply of 510,000 tonnes from November 2024 until April 2025.
