The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has forecasted that Egypt will emerge as the world's largest wheat importer in the marketing year 2024/25, with its grain imports projected to rise from the expected 11 million tons in the previous year to 12 million tons. This move comes as Egypt recovers from a foreign exchange reserve crisis and aims to restore its wheat supplies. Additionally, the USDA anticipates increased wheat import demands from other North African countries, including Algeria, Morocco, and Nigeria, due to an ongoing drought in the region. The total wheat imports by North African countries for the marketing year 2024/25 are expected to reach 31.5 million tons, up from 30.1 million tons in the current season. Egypt is also expected to continue exporting wheat flour to neighboring Sudan.
