The South Chungcheong Province has allocated 600 million won in reserve funds to provide emergency support to minimize the damage caused by yellowing and whitening of seaweed farms in Seocheon County. According to recent data from the South Chungcheong Province, the affected seaweed farms are located in Seomyeon, Biryeon-myeon, Maseomyeon, and other areas, totaling 25 sites covering 3,156 hectares and 56,000 seaweed beds, which accounts for 95% of the seaweed farms in Seocheon. The yellowing and whitening of seaweed in the Seocheon area is occurring for the third year since 2022. Yellowing and whitening are symptoms where the water sacs within the cells enlarge, causing the seaweed to turn yellow-white and the leaves to fall off or fade. This yellowing and whitening of seaweed is attributed to a lack of nutrients such as dissolved inorganic nitrogen in the seaweed farms due to high water temperatures in the fall.
