The European agency MARS has lowered its forecasts for the average yield of maize and sunflower in the European Union due to unfavourable conditions in the south and east of Europe. Excessively high temperatures and a precipitation deficit in several countries, including Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, eastern Ukraine, southern Russia, and Belarus, have negatively affected the accumulation of biomass and shortened the grain filling period. Additionally, prolonged severe storms and flooding in September caused further negative impacts on crop yields in central Europe.
