In the first eight months of the 2023/24 period, the European Union saw a significant 16% increase in rapeseed meal imports, reaching 681.5 thousand tons, with imports from the Russian Federation growing by 11%, making Russia the top supplier. This increase is part of a broader effort by the EU to reduce its reliance on imported feed protein, notably by substituting soybean meal with more cost-effective rapeseed meal in animal feed. The rise in imports from Belarus and Ukraine also contributed to this trend, especially as Belarusian exports became more attractive due to lower meal prices amid concerns over potential EU import duty increases on oil crops. This shift aligns with the Union for the Promotion of Oil and Protein Plants (UFOP)'s “10+10” strategy, aimed at enhancing the cultivation of large-grain legumes within the EU to further decrease dependency on imported feed protein.
