The European Union announced, this Monday (22), the reopening of the European market for chicken and turkey meat produced in Brazil. Exports had been suspended since May, following the confirmation of an isolated outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in Rio Grande do Sul. The European regulation, published today, comes into effect as of tomorrow (23), but already authorizes the entry of Brazilian products with a production date from September 18. The measure was the result of negotiations conducted by the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Carlos Fávaro, with the European Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare, Olivér Várhelyi, on September 4. The resumption will be done in phases: Thanks to the rapid containment of the outbreak by Brazilian authorities, the country regained its disease-free status in just 28 days.
