The European Union's pig population, which saw a significant decline in 2021 and 2022, is now showing signs of recovery. Preliminary Eurostat data reveals a slight decrease of 0.6% in the total pig population in late 2023, but an increase of 1.7% in the number of sows over 50 kilograms. While Spain and Poland experienced an increase in piglet numbers, most other EU member states saw a decrease. Despite these fluctuations, experts predict that pig slaughter in 2024 will be on par with 2023 levels, with a moderate increase expected in the second half of the year.
