The European Union has set an ultimatum for the poultry and pork producing industries to adapt to new environmental regulations aiming to reduce polluting emissions. The directive, which excludes the bovine sector, will be implemented over the next 22 months, with the initial phase commencing this week. The goal is to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides, ammonia, mercury, methane, and carbon dioxide by 40% by 2050, compared to 2020 levels. The regulations will primarily affect intensive production establishments with a certain number of pigs, poultry, and laying hens. Extensive farms, animal husbandry for domestic use, and beef farms are excluded. Member States are encouraged to establish significant sanctions for non-compliance.
