Six European supermarket chains, including subsidiaries of Ahold Delhaize and Carrefour, have announced plans to stop selling certain or all of Brazil's beef products over links to Amazon deforestation. The decision comes in the wake of an investigation by Repórter Brasil that accused the world's largest meat processor, JBS, of 'cattle washing'. Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon has surged since 2019, reaching a 15-year high in 2021. The supermarkets have suspended thousands of suppliers for non-compliance with their anti-deforestation policies. JBS insists it has a zero-tolerance policy for illegal deforestation and is working towards a system to monitor indirect suppliers by 2025.
