Intense rains and floods in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, have severely affected vegetable farming, with losses reported in nearly all municipalities, according to Emater/RS-Ascar's survey. The floods impacted over 71,000 hectares of leafy crops and vegetables, generating an estimated annual revenue of R$5.6 billion. The hardest hit areas include Bagé, Uruguaiana, Alegrete, Quaraí, and Ijuí, with some regions experiencing up to 60% loss in vegetable production. The floods have also caused damage to irrigation systems, greenhouses, and soil, leading to increased prices for vegetables and shortages in the market. The situation is expected to improve with the transition to mid-season and winter vegetables and the resumption of traffic between Pelotas and Porto Alegre.
