In 2024, Russia experienced a significant decrease in Pacific salmon catches, resulting in the smallest catch since 2011, which nonetheless still supported approximately 11-12 thousand tons of salmon caviar production. Despite the reduced catch, there is no anticipated caviar shortage in the country, thanks to the practice of direct contracts between retailers and producers and the maintenance of ample reserves by retail chains ahead of the holiday season. The market price of caviar is largely dependent on the poor fishing results, with demand remaining stable and a high season for sales during the cold months. The price dynamics of caviar also exhibit seasonality, influenced by the salmon fishing season, and there are concerns over counterfeit caviar sales, highlighting the importance of consumer caution and the need for purchasing from trusted sources.
