Avocado farming in Nigeria is not yet widely adopted for commercial purposes, with most plantings being for subsistence. Despite the crop's high demand and potential for generating foreign exchange, the government's agricultural efforts are primarily focused on commodities like cocoa, rice, and maize, neglecting under-explored plants like avocado. The recently launched Special Agro-industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) program in Nigeria could potentially boost the avocado value chain, as it will be focusing on the development of crops and livestock in states known for avocado production. The Avocado Society of Nigeria (AVOSON) believes that the country can earn over N80 billion annually from Hass avocado exports, given the crop's low risk, high return, and health benefits.
