In 2021, Italian fruit and vegetable exports reached a record high of 5.2 billion euros, with Germany, France, and Austria being the biggest consumers. However, the sector is at risk due to increasing transport costs, which account for 30-35% of the logistic cost for fresh products. The most valued exports include apricots, apples, kiwis, tomatoes, lettuce, and cabbage, while citrus fruits and potatoes see a decrease. The surge in fuel prices could further increase logistic costs, as Italy already faces an additional cost of 13 billion euros for freight transport compared to other countries. Coldiretti is emphasizing the need for structural improvements to enhance connections between the South and North of Italy, and with the rest of the world by sea and high-speed rail.
