In 2021, Russia experienced a significant increase in the export of leguminous crops, with a 38% rise to a total of 1.6 million tons, valued at $693 million, marking a 97% increase from the previous year. This growth was primarily driven by a 64% increase in dried peas exports, followed by a 44% increase in dried chickpeas and a 2.8 times increase in lentils exports. The main buyers of these legumes were Turkey, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Italy, and Latvia, with Turkey taking the lead. This surge in exports is attributed to high harvest levels in Russia and reduced production in major exporting countries due to weather-related issues, notably in Canada. The reduced export potential of Canada has led to a shift in market focus to Russia, resulting in higher prices for leguminous crops.
