One of the sectors most affected by the 50% tariffs imposed by the U.S. government on Brazilian products, the machinery and equipment industry saw a 13.1% drop in exports to the United States in September, compared to the same month in 2024.
On a month-to-month basis—that is, compared to August, when the tariffs had already been raised—the drop was 10%, according to a report released today by Abimaq, the entity that represents factories of mechanical capital goods.
The biggest drops from August to September were recorded in shipments of components (-28.9%), agricultural machinery (-20.6%), and machinery for the manufacturing industry (-18.5%).
Since sales to the United States were already falling before President Donald Trump's tariff hike, exports to the country have accumulated an 8.2% drop from January to September. Since January of last year, the participation of the United States in exports of machinery and equipment produced in Brazil has fallen from 31% to 21%.
