The Hungarian green pea and sweet corn sector is facing a crisis due to extreme weather conditions, with many farmers considering abandoning green pea cultivation, which could lead to a collapse of domestic production and significant losses for the sweet corn industry and processing sector. The situation is critical as green peas are a crucial raw material for the refrigeration and canning industry, and the loss of green pea production could result in a shortage of 20-30% of these industries' raw materials. Additionally, sweet corn, which is sown on a significant portion of the green pea production area, could lead to a deficit of 18-23%. These vegetables are essential for the Hungarian manufacturing industry, accounting for 75% of the volume output of the processing industry. Urgent measures and targeted subsidies are needed to address these issues and prevent further losses.
