The European Commission (EC) has declared that farmers who cultivate nitrogen-fixing plants or catch crops on 4% of their arable land without using plant protection products will be acknowledged as meeting the GAEC 8 standard. This standard is a prerequisite for receiving support, including direct payments under the Common Agricultural Policy. The decision has been applauded by the European Commission Commissioner for Agriculture, Janusz Wojciechowski, who anticipates a positive response from farmers across the European Union.
