Himachal Pradesh agricultural sector has seen a significant shift towards off-season and exotic vegetable farming, occupying 60% of the total vegetable cultivation area in the 2020-21 season. This shift is driven by the higher market demand and prices during the off-season. The switch has proven profitable for farmers, with potential earnings ranging from Rs 60,000 to Rs 2 lakh per hectare, a significant increase compared to traditional crops. The area under off-season vegetable cultivation has grown from 42,320 hectares in 2016-17 to 52,491 hectares in 2020-21, and the production volume has also increased. The Department of Agriculture has supported this shift through the introduction of grafted vegetable seedlings and the promotion of seed production.
