Watermelon farmers in the Prayagraj, Kaushambi, and Fatehpur districts of India are experiencing significant losses due to a recent heatwave, with crop yields reducing by 35% to 40% and fruit weights halving due to high temperatures. The heat has affected the quality and quantity of the popular watermelon varieties Saraswati, Arohi, and Muskan, making it difficult for farmers to sell in other districts and states. The intense heat has also negatively impacted tomato and parwal (pointed gourd) crops, leading to concerns about the profitability of summer fruit farmers who grow on over 2500 acres of land. Farmers are experimenting with hybrid watermelon and melon varieties using the mulch cultivation technique, which requires fewer resources but offers higher profits due to their higher Total Solid Sugar (TSS) value.
