FENAZEITES, the National Federation of Olive Growers Cooperatives in Portugal, is raising alarms about the future of traditional olive groves amid climate change and market difficulties. The Federation calls for an urgent market analysis to maintain the profitability of olive oil from these groves, as high temperatures and droughts have diminished production. The Galician olive variety has been particularly hit by gafa, affecting harvests. Additionally, the decline in olive oil prices below production costs endangers the sustainability of traditional groves, which span approximately 250,000 hectares and face higher production costs and mechanization issues compared to modern groves. This concern is highlighted in conjunction with World Olive Day on November 26th, as recognized by UNESCO.
