Bulgaria has seen a significant change in its fish market, with imports of refrigerated Greek fish increasing dramatically since 2010 due to new storage technologies and efficient logistics by large retail chains. This has led to a rise in fish consumption in the country, which was previously one of the lowest in the EU. The consumption has increased from 5.4 kg per person in 2014 to 10 kg per person currently. However, there is a lack of Bulgarian fish in shops as the country relies more on imports due to the lack of farming and a strong processing sector. Bulgaria's aquaculture production doubled from 2009-2018, and the number of fish farms has increased to 744. Imports of fish are mainly for processing, with about 40-50 companies involved in the process.
