In June 2024, Peruvian fisheries experienced a significant boost, with anchovies being the primary contributor to this growth. A total of 41,500 tonnes of anchovies were recorded, generating 103 million Peruvian soles. Despite this increase, there was a notable shift in the catch structure for fish meant for direct human consumption. Freeze-on-board landings saw a decrease of 9.6%, largely due to a 29.4% drop in squid catches, impacting other species like shrimp, mackerel, and tuna. Overall, the total value of seafood landings rose by 56.8% compared to June 2023, driven by the increased anchovy catch for industrial use. This growth presents new opportunities for processors and exporters but also raises concerns about the potential risks of overfishing and the need to ensure the sustainable management of marine resources.
